Mushroom Cultivation

Learn how to grow your own shiitake mushrooms with Tamar Haspel of Starving off the Land and Ian Ives of Mass Audubon's Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary. You'll get an overview of how mushrooms grow, and then you'll roll up your sleeves and get to work. We'll be inoculating oak logs by drilling holes in the wood and hammering in spore-laden dowels, and you'll get to take one of the logs home. Treat it right, and you should have your first flush of shiitakes next fall. The session involves power tools and some physical labor, so be prepared. Limited to 15 participants.
